How the occupancy surveys work
Every month the INE (Spain’s National Statistics Institute) runs occupancy surveys on a sample of accommodation providers. You only need to answer if your property is in that month’s sample: if it is, you receive a communication from the INE (by email or letter) with the questionnaire’s order number and password. The password changes with each questionnaire.
The surveys are answered in IRIA, the INE’s platform, in one of two ways:
- Filling in the on-screen form, question by question.
- Uploading an XML file with the month’s data. This is only possible for the hotels and apartments surveys.
Each questionnaire’s deadline is stated in the INE’s communication.
Which survey applies to you and how to answer it
The XML file always covers the whole month. Even if the questionnaire asks for a week (hotels) or a fortnight (apartments), if you answer with the XML file it must contain every day of the month, from the 1st to the last. The INE itself requires this. If you generate it with only the week or the fortnight, IRIA will reject it.
How to tell which survey is yours
The survey’s name appears in the INE’s communication and in IRIA as the questionnaire title: for example, Ocupación en Alojamientos Turísticos. Hoteles or Ocupación en Alojamientos Turísticos. Apartamentos.
If you upload Roomdoo’s hotels file to an apartments questionnaire, IRIA rejects it with an error that mentions the ENCUESTA element. In that case, see Tourist apartment occupancy survey.
Regions with their own data collection
In some regions the survey is managed by the regional statistics institute (for example, EUSTAT in the Basque Country). If the communication comes from that body and not from the INE, contact support before sending anything.
