# INE occupancy surveys: which one applies to you and how to answer it

> Which occupancy surveys the INE sends to accommodation providers, which ones can be answered with Roomdoo's XML file and which ones are filled in by hand in IRIA.

## How the occupancy surveys work

Every month the INE (Spain's National Statistics Institute) runs occupancy surveys on a **sample of accommodation providers**. You only need to answer if your property is in that month's sample: if it is, you receive a communication from the INE (by email or letter) with the questionnaire's **order number** and **password**. The password changes with each questionnaire.

The surveys are answered in **IRIA**, the INE's platform, in one of two ways:

* **Filling in the on-screen form**, question by question.
* **Uploading an XML file** with the month's data. This is only possible for the hotels and apartments surveys.

Each questionnaire's deadline is stated in the INE's communication.

## Which survey applies to you and how to answer it

| Survey | Establishments | Period the questionnaire asks for | Accepts an XML file? | What Roomdoo offers |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| Tourist accommodation occupancy. **Hotels** | Hotels, hostels, guesthouses… | 7 consecutive days of the month | Yes | Generates the XML file. See [Export data for the INE survey](/en/compliance/ine) |
| Tourist accommodation occupancy. **Apartments** | Tourist apartments | A fortnight of the month | Yes | Ask support for it (soon, also from the app). See [Tourist apartment occupancy survey](/en/compliance/ine-apartments) |
| Rural tourism | Rural tourism accommodation | The month | No | Filled in on screen in IRIA |
| Campsites | Campsites | As stated in the INE's communication | No | Filled in on screen in IRIA |
| Hostels (albergues) | Hostels | As stated in the INE's communication | No | Filled in on screen in IRIA |

<Warning>
  **The XML file always covers the whole month.** Even if the questionnaire asks for a week (hotels) or a fortnight (apartments), if you answer with the XML file it must contain every day of the month, from the 1st to the last. The INE itself requires this. If you generate it with only the week or the fortnight, IRIA will reject it.
</Warning>

## How to tell which survey is yours

The survey's name appears in the INE's communication and in IRIA as the questionnaire title: for example, **Ocupación en Alojamientos Turísticos. Hoteles** or **Ocupación en Alojamientos Turísticos. Apartamentos**.

If you upload Roomdoo's hotels file to an apartments questionnaire, IRIA rejects it with an error that mentions the `ENCUESTA` element. In that case, see [Tourist apartment occupancy survey](/en/compliance/ine-apartments).

## Regions with their own data collection

In some regions the survey is managed by the regional statistics institute (for example, EUSTAT in the Basque Country). If the communication comes from that body and not from the INE, contact support before sending anything.

## Where the file's data comes from

Roomdoo's file is generated from:

* The guests' **check-ins** for the month: only guests with their check-in done count, with their country of residence and, if they live in Spain, their province. See [INE report fails because of incomplete guest data](/en/compliance/ine-incomplete-data).
* The **property's INE setup**: tourism registration number, category, beds, staff… Support sets it up. See [Set up INE for a new property or a year change](/en/compliance/ine-new-property).
